Overview

Write Better Excel Formulas Using Copilot is a practical, hands-on session focused on helping Excel users collaborate effectively with AI when building and troubleshooting formulas. Rather than guessing syntax, copying formulas from the internet, or relying on trial and error, participants will learn how to use Copilot to generate formulas from plain-language business questions, explain complex logic step-by-step, and refine or debug existing calculations. The emphasis is on improving accuracy, clarity, and confidence-while maintaining control over spreadsheet logic.

This session demonstrates how to use Copilot as a thinking partner inside Excel-not as a replacement for foundational skills. Participants will learn how to validate AI-generated formulas, test results, and ensure their work remains reliable for reporting, forecasting, and analysis. By the end of the session, attendees will have a structured workflow for collaborating with AI to write clearer, more accurate Excel formulas.

Prerequisites

This is not a beginner Excel class.

Participants must already be comfortable with:

  • Creating and editing Excel formulas without step-by-step guidance
  • Using common functions such as IF, SUM, SUMIFS, COUNTIFS, and lookup functions
  • Understanding basic formula structure, including cell references and ranges
  • Navigating Excel worksheets confidently (formatting, sorting, filtering, tables)

Attendees who are new to Excel, unfamiliar with writing formulas, or looking for introductory spreadsheet training may find this session too advanced. A working knowledge of Excel formulas is required in order to evaluate, validate, and refine AI-generated output effectively.

Participants should have access to Microsoft 365 Copilot within Excel;  the standalone Copilot chat experience does not provide the same workbook-level formula generation and editing capabilities demonstrated in this session.

Why you should Attend

Are you tired of searching online for formula examples and hoping they work in your spreadsheet?

Have you ever copied a complex formula without fully understanding how it works?

Do you spend too much time troubleshooting formula errors that seem small but break your reports?

Are you hesitant to trust AI-generated formulas because you’re unsure how to validate them?

Formula mistakes can quietly impact budgets, forecasts, and operational decisions. Learning how to collaborate with Copilot (while maintaining control) can dramatically improve both your speed and your confidence.
